Moisture content of wood is the ratio of the weight of water to the weight of actual wood. It varies throughout the year, and from tree-to-tree, but also within the tree. Wood can have a moisture content in excess of 100%.
We cut down a Sitka Spruce tree in July to get samples for a couple of high school students on summer placements (Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme). These were cut into small sticks of clear wood that were about 25 mm square and 350 mm long. The piece that contained the least water had a moisture content of 70% while the wettest was 265%. To put it another way, the wettest sample had an original volume of 233 cm3...and contained 173 cm3 of water!
This is cross-view stereopair. To view this image in 3D you need to cross your eyes until you see three fuzzy images. Then try and focus the middle image. This takes a lot of patience to get right, but once you've done it once it gets easier.

When I came in to school here, this building was referred to as "New Science" and McLane Hall was called "Science" Now this is the old science building, or Science 1.

The Biology Department has a vast number of stuffed animals. A large proportion of them are road-kill or found dead, since the majority of the animals are endangered.
These displays are maintained by the biology department, which promotes them through writing assignments for GE classes.

The very newest building on campus. The Computer science department has moved offices here and they appear to love it.

Behind me, again, is the science II building. Also known as New Science. Behind you, is the Downing Planetarium. Stop by some night.

Fresno State has one of the best agriculture programs around, particularly at it's academic level. It's unfortunate that they have the largest number of buildings on campus and every one was designed in the Neo-Godawful style prevalent in California schools built between 1950 and 1970.

This is one of the oldest structures on campus. The quad is four buildings surrounding a grassy area. It's a nice place to eat lunch if you don't want to be inside. The buildings themselves are slated for demolition in the next ten years, to be replaced with larger and better buildings.
Here we see Social Science (foreground) and McKee-Fisk (Background).

Super fabulous. If not a little scary.
I can't say a boy has ever bought me a noisemaker before. I'm going to use it to contact extra terrestrials.
