REST death march continues on

Paul Krill: Indigo removes the reliance on Web servers by extending beyond HTTP to support protocols such as SMTP, TCP, and REST (Representational State Transfer).

Ryan Tomayko: Extending HTTP to “support REST”.

Randy: I assume this is how the REST architecture guys intend to win the war. Paul states that Indigo is extending beyond HTTP to other protocols and Ryan twists the words into a ridiculous statement, extending HTTP to support REST. Nice try Ryan!

C# interview question

I found this Channel 9 thread very interesting. First I thought the trickiness of this trick interview question doesn't help filter the good programmers from the bad. The truth is that a simple compile will show any developer that the code doesn't compile. You don't need a PHD to figure this out. On the other hand, a genius could easily be tricked by his eyes and not see the compile error.

But then reading the answers, I realized that most people will make up obviously incorrect answers. That's a pretty good filter. If you answered "you can't write out integer values" like Steve411, then you might as well cut the interview short.

http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=90701#90701

The 19 deadly sins of software security

The book is carved up into 19 chapters, or Sins, and each is only 10-15pp long. The Sins are:

Buffer Overflows

Format String problems

SQL injection

Command injection

Failure to handle errors

Cross-site scripting

Failing to protect network traffic

Use of "magic" URLs and hidden forms

Improper use of SSL

Use of weak password-based systems

Failing to store and protect data

Information leakage

Improper file access

Integer range errors

Trusting network address information

Signal race conditions

Unauthenticated key exchange

Failing to use cryptographically strong random numbers

Poor usability

Learn to Code

I just read a particularly funny fragment of Java code, which I must share with you. This Java method uses three different techniques for if blocks; end-of-line, start-of-next-line and none.

if (x) {
 do();
}

if (x)
{
 do();
}

if (x)
 do();

Sometimes, the author indents variables one tab from the previous start bracket, sometimes he doesn't indent variables.

{
 MyClass o;
}

{
MyClass o;
}

Sometimes, he break lines into smaller lines just before the opening braces of a method and sometimes he break lines just after the opening brace of a method.

o.do
 ("this and that of a long parameter list");

o.do(
 "this and that of a long parameter list");

He line break between the throw and exception class in some exception specifications, but not in others. Last, his comments are extremely verbose and obvious. Can you image how hard this is to read? My own coding style is very exact. I even delete extra spaces that popup on the end of lines.

PHP + XML-RPC

Netcraft: Many popular PHP-based blogging, wiki and content management programs can be exploited through a security hole in the way PHP programs handle XML commands. [cut] The affected libraries, including PHPXMLRPC and Pear XML-RPC, are included in many interactive applications written in PHP. [cut] By creating an XML file that uses single quotes to escape into the eval() call an attacker can easily execute php code on the target server.
